Abenaki – Algonquin Cook Book & Memories

Kwai Kwai All!

Francine (Blue Wolf Spirit) from our tribe and Joanne (Dreaming Horse) from the Wolf Spirit Scholarship Band are in the process of compiling a book on the Abenaki & Algonquin cultural items.
The types of information that will be in the book are as follows:
  • In Memory of Our Ancestors
  • Heirloom Seeds vs. Hybrid Seeds
  • Native Vegetable and Fruit Seeds
  • Three Sisters Garden
  • About Native Foods
  • Sacred Tobacco – Recipes and Proper Use
  • Meats
  • Fish
  • Vegetables
  • Desserts
  • Breads
  • Beverages
  • Home Remedies
The book will probably be a year in the making. Once it is printed, it will be sold through both tribes – available at powwows, through our websites, etc.
The proceeds will go directly to our tribes, as this is to be a fund-raising project with the benefit of passing our traditions and foods down to our descendants.
In order for this endeavor to be a success, we need your input. We are asking that you share native recipes that have been passed down through your families. Along with the recipes, please add some information about when the recipe was usually served (e.g. holidays or during the winter, etc). We want you to share with us what types of foods would normally be served as a side-dish with your recipes. We want the book to be interesting!
Please don’t worry about duplicate recipes, we plan to includes variations of the same recipe, if available.
Please send recipes as you find them – we’ll let you know once we have enough.
The recipes we are looking for are:
  • Meats
  • Fish
  • Vegetables (includes soups & stews)
  • Desserts
  • Beverages
  • Breads
  • Home Remedies
You may send the recipes to Francine via email, or make a copy and send by snail mail. Please include your name and some contact information in case we have questions. Please add a photo of the completed recipe (if possible). The photo can be sent to me digitally or through the mail.

How to make women’s Abenaki Regalia on YouTube.com

Kwai Kwai All,
I have just completed a 4-part series on how to make women’s Abenaki Regalia. This is meant to help all of you who have been asking for some directions. I had to take tBlue Wolf Spirit wearing regaliahe video in 4 parts due to the limitations of my camera. One of the segments has a long pause at the end – sorry! I couldn’t edit.

Note: For purchase of trade cloth, follow the pattern directions for the dress and leggings. You won’t have much of that color left over. For the skirt, purchase 2 yards of material (36 or 45 wide). Do purchase a package of waist band elastic in addition to the elastic and ribbon suggested in the pattern directions.

To view, just go to www.youtube.com and on the top of the page in the Search bar, type Abenaki Regalia. All four parts will come up (but not in order for some reason). Just start with part 1. If you have any questions, just send me an email at franbluefeather@gmail.com

Akwanna adio,
Francine

Kwai Kwai All,

Below is the info I have to date on the Pow Wow that we have been invited to take part in. Chief Gary Dumas of the Gray Wolf Clan is looking for vendors  and volunteers from our tribe who can help in any way possible.  Please contact me so we can meet our commitment to achieve great success for their Pow wow.

Traditional dress is highly appreciated ! Members needing campsites or early vendor time to set up, can arrive a day early, on September 7th, according to Chief Gary.

We are very grateful to the people of the Gray Wolf Clan for letting us take part in their Pow Wow, giving us a good experience before we start our own in the near future.

Reflection

I gaze into the running brook
And see my father’s face
Both my grandfathers stand behind him,
As all my great-grandfathers do.

I look into the sky
And see my mother’s eyes
With both my grandmothers behind her,
As all my great-grandmothers do

An Abenaki Poem

As we stand tall, we hold each other’s hand.

We want you to understand who and what we are.

In our body, and soul, we are Abenaki Indians.

As we yell, “we do exist.”

Look at us! We are real, inside and out.

Put us on your list. We have been brave.

We cannot look the other way.

We are here to stay. You hear our drums play.

We bring peace from our chief who stands proud on our ground that we share.

We all breath the same air. We drink the same water.

Our ancestors are still here. If you quit, you can hear them cry.

They still want to know why; Can’t you accept us?

Open your eyes. We are here and, stand proud.

We are Abenaki
